Polevolt - Electric Vehicle Charging

Started in UNCC's EPIC laboratory in Charlotte, North Carolina, PoleVolt combines the ubiquity of utility poles with the growing need for electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
The PoleVolt system provides a complete Level 2 charging solution that leverages existing infrastructure, eliminating costly power cable boring and trenching while delivering charging access where communities need it most.

The Problem - Infrastructure is prohibitively expensive

Building EV charging infrastructure is prohibitively expensive—the high costs of boring and trenching are major barriers to development. Polevolt offers a cost-efficient solution that minimizes these expenses, helping accelerate the installation of charging stations and encourage wider EV adoption.

The Polevolt Solution - Interfacing with the hardware

To reduce costs, we avoided adding screens or complex hardware. Instead, a simple QR code leads to a web app that interfaces with the system. This simplifies the user experience—customers can autofill information, pay online, and start charging without downloading a separate app.

The web app does a lot more than just start the users charge

While users charge their vehicles, the web app provides an opportunity to discover nearby restaurants and monitor their charging session progress.
